Downtown Facade Work to Begin Soon
An almost vacant downtown property is one that should soon begin to see some new life now that the Galesburg City Council has given its blessing to work being done there.

Aldermen last week awarded a $37,000 revolving loan, and a $10,000 facade renovation grant for Galesburg native Gerald Weaver to renovate the former Radio Village Mall on East Main Street -- he wants to turn the front of the building into three distinct storefronts and rename the facility the Weaver Main Street Center.

Weaver told aldermen last week he's grateful for all the help he's received from the City and the Galesburg Downtown Council in order to make this project happen.

"Many hours have gone into the project and in the last 18 months hasn't been a light deal. I also want to thank Jay Bullis who is the President of the Downtown Council, likewise, for all the help and the assistance he's given me with his people, the Downtown Council and his parnership arrangement that we've worked out with the city."

Weaver says results of that work are already beginning to be seen, with two tenants already in the facility, and a letter of intent he has signed with a prospective restaurant that was contingent on the facade work getting the go-ahead. He would not yet say, though, just what that restaurant would be.

The facade work is expected to begin next month.
