Schock Has Democratic Opponent For Seat
Family medical problems - including his son's autism - drove Carl Ray into bankruptcy. Now the Tazewell County man says a "no" vote on a children's health insurance bill by U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Peoria) has inspired him to run against Schock.

Carl Ray is a Democrat and first-time politician who says Schock, at 28 famous for being America's youngest congressman, "lacks the life experience (and) the depth of context to make the right decisions." Ray says Schock's opposition to S-CHIP (State Children's Health Insurance Program) is a big reason he is running, as is Schock's attendance - missing about 5 percent of the votes this year. Ray dismisses Schock as being more "celebrity" than Congressman.

The district includes Peoria, Jacksonville, part of Knox County and part of Springfield and has not been represented by a Democrat in almost a century. Ray says he is aware of that but also believes it is more moderate than Schock is.

Ray is from Peru, Ill., served in the Air Force during the Gulf War, and lives in Washington, Ill., now. His career has been with Union Pacific and with Caterpillar, where he works in capital planning at an office in Normal.
