Quinn Will Not Force 2 U of I Trustees to Step Down; Names Two More
Gov. Pat Quinn will allow two University of Illinois trustees who refuse to resign to remain on the board.

The announcement came Wednesday as Quinn appointed two board members, Christopher Kennedy and Lawrence Oliver II.

Quinn says rather than involve the university in a legal battle, it's more important to fill open trustee seats and move the university forward. The two who have refused to resign have stated that they were prepared to go to court if they were removed by Quinn.

There are 13 board members, including the governor. Nine are appointed by the governor for terms of six years, and three student trustees are elected on their campuses for one-year terms.

Kennedy, of Kenilworth, is the son of the late Robert F. Kennedy and the nephew of U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, who died Tuesday.

Oliver, of Chicago, is the chief counsel for investigations at the Boeing Co.
