Peoria Man Gets 30 Years for Sexual Assault of Minor in Galesburg
POSTED 2:11 p-m 8/26/09 A man convicted in a local sex abuse case is going to prison for a long time.

Knox County Circuit Court Judge James Stewart on Wednesday sentenced 45-year old William Malone of Peoria to the maximum 30 years in the department of corrections.

Malone was convicted of aggravated criminal sexual abuse during a bench trial in May. The Knox County State's Attorney's office says the original charge was a Class II felony, but Illinois statute allowed it to be sentenced as a Class X due to Malone's prior criminal history.

Malone was charged late last year following an investigation surrounding the sexual abuse of a minor from Galesburg at a local church function.

State's Attorney John Pepmeyer's office sought the 30 year prison sentence. Pepmeyer credited Assistant State's Attorney Erik Gibson and the Galesburg Police Department for the successful prosecution of Malone at trial.

"We are extremely satisfied with the outcome of this case," Pepmeyer said. "The support and cooperation of the Galesburg Police Department was key in helping us to ensure the safety of all Knox County citizens by sending sexually dangerous people such as Mr. Malone to prison for as long as possible."
