Fawell Says Love Made Him Turn Against Ryan
CHICAGO (AP) -- A longtime aide to former Gov. George Ryan says he pleaded guilty and testified against his now-imprisoned mentor to save the woman he loves.

Scott Fawell was convicted in 2003 on racketeering and mail-fraud charges, and he's been out of prison for less than a year.

During an interview on WTTW-TV's "Chicago Tonight" show Wednesday, Fawell said he turned on Ryan to save his fiance, who also worked for Ryan, from a lengthy prison term. She eventually got 4 months.

Ryan was convicted of charges that accused him -- among other things -- of stopping an investigation of bribes paid for truck driver's licenses. That scandal was blamed for the deaths of six children in a fiery highway crash in Wisconsin.

When asked, Fawell said he doesn't feel any responsibility for the deaths, which he blamed on "petty graft" that had been going on for years.
