Orpheum President Says Boiler Is Okay for Now -- But Still Needs to Be Replaced
POSTED 4:02pm 8/27/09 The winter season of performances and other activities at Galesburg's Orpheum Theatre will go on as schedules, thanks to a bit of a break given by an inspector.

Theatre president Kate Francis says a re-inspection by state officials of the boiler at the Orpheum has deemed it okay for use once some minor repairs are made. The State Fire Marshall had originally condemned the boiler, which might have meant canceling a lot of shows.

Francis tells WGIL there were a few things that needed to be done in order to make the boiler at least temporarily okay to use. "He asked that it was going to be condemned until such time that we could...take the skin off, take the inspection plates off -- which, is quite an...involved process -- take that off so he could get an interior look at the unit, and take a look at what's called the mud leg, which is the bottom portion of the boiler," Francis said. "So, we have done that."

Francis says bids need to be sought for the repairs first and, but they hope to be started soon. She calls the repairs "band-aid" measures, because the boiler, along with an air conditioning system, still need to be replaced.

Francis says that's part of the reason she's actively seeking support for a half-million dollar federal "Save America's Treasures Grant" -- and a half-million dollars in local matching funds.

She's pursued such dollars from entities ranging from the City of Galesburg and Knox County, to Carl Sandburg College.
