Peoria County Considers Video Poker Ban
PEORIA, Ill. (AP) -- Peoria County is considering its own ban on video poker after the state legalized the popular form of gambling.

The state law included an option for local jurisdictions to pass their own bans.

Peoria County Board member Carol Trumpe says the county needs to consider the ban because gambling often takes money out of the pockets of families that can't afford it.

Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis, however, says such a local ban would take away the rights of local business owners.

Gov. Pat Quinn signed the law legalizing video poker to raise revenue as Illinois wrestles with a multibillion dollar budget deficit.

Police say gambling was common on video poker machines and seldom punished around the state even before the law.
