| Seasonal Influenza Vaccine Available Monday at KCHD |
The Knox County Health Department will start offering flu shots for adults aged 19 years and older at the Health Department beginning Monday, August 31, 2009, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
After that date, flu shots will be available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Flu shots are $30.00 each; pneumonia shots are $45.00; the Department accepts Medicare, Medicaid, and State Health Insurance. Flu shots for children and adolescents will become available at a later date.
"Individuals should be aware that the flu vaccine available at this time is to protect individuals from normal seasonal influenza," states Mary Butcher, Communicable Disease Coordinator for the Knox County Health Department. "Later in the fall, flu shots will become available to protect individuals from the H1N1 flu virus."
A special Drive Thru Flu Shot Clinic will be held on August 29th at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Home at 1070 West Fremont Street in Galesburg from 7:00 to 10:00 a.m. The Drive Thru Clinic is held each year in collaboration with the Funeral Home to accommodate those individuals who experience difficulties getting into and out of their vehicles; shots are provided to individuals in their vehicles.
"It may be a little confusing for individuals this year, addressing two influenzas in one season," noted Michele Fishburn, Director of Community Health Improvement for the Health Department. "But, it is especially important for individuals to be vaccinated against the seasonal flu this year." Direction from IDPH is that Health Departments begin providing seasonal flu shots sooner, rather than later. "Immunizing as many individuals as possible may help avoid the occurrence of both influenza viruses at once, which could seriously strain the healthcare workforce," stated Fishburn. "Later in the fall, once the H1N1 vaccine becomes available, those shots will be made available beginning with populations prioritized by the CDC."
Individuals should consciously practice preventative measures while waiting for flu shots to become available to them. For more information about the flu or flu shots, contact your doctor or the Knox County Health Department at 309-344-222 or visit www.knoxcountyhealth.org.
