Time and Effort Key to Showing Hogs
It's not just the same ol' dog and pony show at the Knox County Fair this year. It's more or a gilt and barrow kind of a fair.

The Knox County Fair among other events Thursday, hosted their hog judging competition.

Residents from around the area were on hand to show off their hogs in front of a judge and a crowd of people.

Ted Inness of Galesburg, has showed animals since he was a kid and now says he has four of his children showing during the hog competition. Inness, who is also a Knox County Fair Board Member, tells WGIL the preparation is key to having a good showing.

"Usually two or three times a day they need to be fed and worked with. A lot of times there's more involvement than that during showtime. It's very intense - there's certain weight limits you have to achieve by state fair time and if your over the weights, you can't show so it takes a lot of time."

Inness says judges in the hog competition are looking for overall thickness, length, muscle structure and a nice frame work. He also says the way the pig moves around the show ring is also a key to a good hog.

More judging of livestock including sheep and steers will continue as the fair rolls into the weekend.
