Galesburg Man Hurt in Motorcycle Mishap Near Avon; Authorities Credit Helmet With Preventing Serious Injuries
POSTED 6:27 a-m 8/8/09 A Galesburg man avoided serious injuries after the motorcycle he was operating struck a deer and went off the road.

The Fulton County Sheriff's Department says deputies were called to Route 41, approximately a quarter-mile north of County Highway 17 south of Avon around midnight Saturday morning.

An investigation at the scene indicated that a motorcycle driven by 37-year old Harold Doan was southbound on Route 41 when several deer entered the road. Police say Doan was unable to avoid striking one of the animals. His motorcycle went down and skidded approximately 50 feet before coming to rest on the right shoulder of the road.

Authorities say Doan suffered moderate injuries, and because he was wearing a helmet, avoided a serious head injury. Doan was treated at the scene by Avon Fire Department first responders then taken by GHAS to OSF Saint Mary Medical Center for additional treatment.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Avon Police Department.
