It's Official: Bob Evans Galva Plant to Close Immediately -- EMPLOYEES, LET WGIL NEWS TELL YOUR STORY
FIRST REPORTED 11:00am, UPDATED 3:38pm 8/9/10 A plant that's been in operation in Henry County nearly four-decades is shutting down -- the victim, its owner says, of a volatile hog market.

Confirming what anonymous sources said on Friday, Bob Evans Farms is closing its production plant in Galva effective immediately, putting nearly 70 people out of work.

The plant produced pork sausage links and rolls, but company spokesperson Margaret Standing tells WGIL the reason for the closure is it's getting harder and harder to get pork.

"The country right now has the smallest sow herd that we've had in more than 100 years," Standing said. "Unfortunately, in the industry right now, we've got production capacity for far more supply than we have. So, unfortunately, it's really an economic situation."

Standing says the employees are great, and it would be sad to lose them, which is why, she says, they're being given severance packages and the chance to transfer to other plants.

The Bob Evans plant in Galva has been in operation for 36 years, and Galva officials reportedly said the company was offered incentives to stay.
