Tuscola May Want FutureGen if Mattoon Doesn't
Now that the US Department of Energy has killed the one and a half billion dollar cutting edge FutureGen project for Mattoon, but would still use the central Illinois community for an underground gas storage site, Mattoon may not be interested. Senator Dick Durbin says Mattoon has until Friday to make a decision to accept the greatly-reduced role.

If Mattoon opts out and chooses not to go forward with the project, its neighboring community -- Tuscola -- may want to get involved.

Tuscola lost out on the original plant in 2007, and the city's Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Brian Moody says if an opportunity arises, they'll talk with the Energy Department about the project. Tuscola would have to play a fast game of catch-up…the community no longer has its original site under option...so if they did proceed, they would be starting from scratch.

Moody also says after being passed over in 2007 for the original plant, he’s not even sure Tuscola even wants to work with the Department of Energy.

While they wait to see what leaders in Mattoon decide, Moody says leaders in Tuscola are learning more about the project.
