Kane County Reduces Health Care Staff
GENEVA, Ill. (AP) -- The Kane County Board has voted to lay off half the employees in the county's health department, pushing programs that serve poor and foster children to other social services agencies.

Officials say Tuesday's move to eliminate 62 jobs was prompted by the decline in state funding. Included among those affected are the case workers who manage programs that arrange health care for needy children. About 6,000 families participate in the program.

Those opposed to the action by the county say the three federally qualified nonprofit social service agencies providing health care in Kane County won't be able to adequately serve people currently in county-operated programs.

Health Department Executive Director Paul Kuehnert asked the board to authorize the service reductions. He says his smaller health department will focus on mandated programs.
