Amtrak Station to Get 5-Ton Lincoln Statue
GALESBURG, Ill. (AP) -- Sometime between now and Labor Day a group of Galesburg veterans will see to it that a new statue of Abraham Lincoln that weighs in at almost 5 tons is placed at the local train depot.

The Galesburg Veterans Committee is bringing the 82-inch granite statue to the central Illinois town. Much of the weight is in the statue's substantial base.

Jon Ponder of Lacky & Sons Monument said the statue is based on one that sits at the Capitol in Washington, D.C.

The company plans to lift the new statue into place before Labor Day and cover it with a shroud. The statue will be unveiled on the holiday.

Alderman Wayne Allen said the statue should cost less than $30,000. No city money is being used.
