K-8 Schools in District 205 Make AYP
The elementary schools in the Galesburg School District are in a unique position.

District-205 Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Joel Estes told the school board Monday night that every Kindergarten-through-eighth grade building has made Adequate Yearly Progress under the federal No Child Left Behind law.

Estes says one of the buildings is doing exceptionally well.

"Lombard (Middle School), for the second year in a row, made Adequate Yearly Progress," Estes said. "They worked themselves off the Academic Watch List. I was speaking to someone at the Illinois State Board of Education...and said, 'I would be surprised if there was another middle school in the state that worked themselves the Watch list two years in a row with such high targets established by No Child Left Behind.' She concurred with me, and said that probably did not happen with any other middle school."

Estes says the remarkable achievement comes despite an increasing poverty rate, and the fact that the district spends less per student than virtually any of its comparable counterparts.

The district as a whole and Galesburg High School, however, did not make AYP, due to what Estes called "mitigating factors". He also says there was a slight overall drop in attendance that is now being addressed.
