State Offers Pet Insurance Advice
CHICAGO (AP) -- With the high cost of pet care, the Illinois Department of Insurance is offering consumer tips on shopping for pet health insurance.

Department Director Michael McRaith says coverage and costs can vary widely depending on a pet's breed and age, so it's important to learn as much as possible about the terms before buying.

The insurance department cites a recent Associated Press-Petside.com survey showing money is a major concern for pet owners seeking health care for their animals.

While pet insurance can make those costs more affordable, some policies may not cover pre-existing conditions. Those may include hereditary conditions.

The Department is issuing a fact sheet about pet insurance that's available at the agency's website.
