Abingdon School Budget Still Being Worked On; Teachers Contract Approved
The Abingdon School District may have received a hopeful sign in its efforts to craft a budget for the school year about to get underway.

Superintendent Tami Roskamp told the District-217 Board of Education Wednesday night they will vote on the spending plan next month, though the public has the chance to view the tentative document now in the Superintendent's office.

That hopeful sign for the budget, Roskamp says, may come from the state, in the form of state aid payments.

"Things that we have been considering [include] the [state per student] foundation level," Roskamp said. "[The state has] maintained a $6,119 for the general state aid. But when the money runs out, they're not going to give us any more. So, the question is, are they giving us anything now? They've given us at least one payment. We expect 22 payments, but that doesn't mean we're going to get them all."

Roskamp says she does, however, expect some expenses to rise, while experiencing a 42-percent cut in the state reimbursement rate for transportation expenses.

Some of those increases are coming in the form of salaries, as board members Wednesday night approved a new one-year contract with the Abingdon Education Association.

Roskamp says teachers are receiving a one-year contract, with raises ranging from one-and-a-half to six-percent, depending on education level and experience.

The district is also covering more of the teachers' health insurance costs.
