Northern Illinois to Get Flood Help
Federal help for those hit by floods could come in a matter of weeks, according to Federal Emergency Management Agency officials.

According to officials with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, flood damage assessments will begin this week in towns hit by heavy rain July 23-24 in portions of Northern Illinois. Towns from east to west across the northern half of the state sustained heavy damage, mostly to homes.

If enough homes sustained damage, those assessments will be sent to FEMA in hopes of federal help. FEMA Region Five Administrator Andrew Velasquez III says it's likely there is enough damage to qualify for federal help. Gov. Pat Quinn has already declared 12 counties state disaster areas.

Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) toured damaged homes in Elmhurst Monday. He says he will look at the possibility of securing federal dollars to help with future flood control projects across the northern half of the state.
