Group Advises Keeping Pets Cool
CHICAGO (AP) -- The Anti-Cruelty Society is offering tips to pet owners to protect their animals during the hot weather forecast to continue to blanket Illinois.

The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat advisory for most of the state through Saturday evening. Temperatures are expected to range from the upper 80s to mid-90s. The heat index will reach triple digits.

The Anti-Cruelty Society says pet owners should provide their pets cool areas and fresh, cool water. The society says dog walks should be limited to morning or evening hours and owners shouldn't jog with dogs during excessively hot weather.

The society also says owners shouldn't leave animals in parked cars, even with the windows open. Signs of heatstroke or distress in dogs include excessive panting or drooling.
