Rutherford Calls For Budget Reforms
A Republican state senator says there are two reforms that must happen before Illinois will start to climb out of its budget mess.

State Sen. Dan Rutherford (R-Chenoa), who is running for state treasurer, says lawmakers in Springfield must further restructure public pensions and reform the way Medicaid services are delivered in Illinois.

"My contention is until those two fundamental restructurings of our government, and the smaller things we should do happen, this government of Illinois does not deserve any more money out of the taxpayers' wallets in an income tax increase, and definitely the last thing we should do is go out and further debt and borrow money," Rutherford said.

Rutherford says lawmakers must learn to say "no" when it comes to borrowing, taxing and spending.

Meanwhile, he says he doesn't place all the blame on Gov. Pat Quinn. He says it was irresponsible of the General Assembly to send an unbalanced budget to the governor in the first place.
