Corn Crop Yields Look Promising
The Illinois agriculture director likes the numbers coming out of the National Agriculture Statistics Services. That's because NASS thinks the Illinois corn crop yield will rival the 2004 record yield, and the Illinois soybean crop will come close to the 2004 record.

State AG Director Tom Jennings says the corn yield is projected to be 180 bushels per acre, up six bushels from last year's yield and equal to the record yield set in 2004. The soybean yield is forecast at 49 bushels per acre, which would be higher than last year, but one bushel below the record yield in 2004.

Jennings expects the harvest to start early, especially in some parts of the state. He says with the hot, dry weather, some Southeastern Illinois farmers are already in the fields with their combines.
