Church Sues to Get $1 Million Owed by State
CHICAGO (AP) -- Lawyers for Chicago's Pilgrim Baptist Church have filed a lawsuit seeking the $1 million from the state of Illinois that was promised by convicted former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Thee lawsuit filed Wednesday in Cook County Circuit Court asks that the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Development be ordered to hand over the grant promised to help the church rebuild an administration building.

Instead of going to the church, the $1 million was awarded to the Loop Lab School, which rented space in the administration building.

At the time, Blagojevich called the misappropriation "a bureaucratic mistake." The Illinois Auditor General's office later determined a member of Blagojevich's staff directed the state money to the school instead of the church.

The landmark church, built in 1890, was destroyed by fire in January 2006.
