Abingdon's Annual Festival to Get Underway
Some residents still call it a "fall festival" even though it technically hasn't been one for decades, but organizers say no matter what you call it, it's ready to get underway.

The annual Abingdon Community Festival starts Thursday and runs Monday night at the fairgrounds in Abingdon. One of the organizers, festival board secretary Angie Perry, says all the familiar activities will be back this year, including livestock shows, kids events, carnival rides, and more.

But Perry tells WGIL this year one of those regulars -- the cake and pie auction -- will have a much more delicious smell to it.

"The Cake, Cookie, and Pie Group will be called the "Baked Goods Group," because we're adding brownies and cupcakes to the mix," Perry said. "With the big cupcake craze that's going on, we thought that would be something new and interesting for local bakers -- especially our junior bakers that are 17 and under that could not necessarily be able to ice a cake, but could ice cupcakes easily. Then brownies: everybody loves chocolate."

Perry says the Saturday night entertainment following the cake and pie auction is the Monmouth-based "Pay-Up Band."

Admission is mostly free, but there are several events where money will be collected at the gate.
