Benefit for Cancer During "Spelling Bee"
The Orpheum Theatre is hoping to raise some money for the American Cancer Society, inspired by one of the lead cast members in the latest of its "Red Carpet Series" of shows this weekend.

Theatre president Kate Francis says there will be a special set of autograph signings after each performance Friday through Sunday of the "25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee", with a free will offering being collected.

Francis says the signings will feature Chad Tallon, playing William Barfee -- known for using his foot to help him spell out words.

Francis says Tallon is currently battling Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

"To see him on state -- his hair is gone, his eyebrows are gone, his eyelashes are gone -- and to see the character he's playing, with the energy it requires, he truly is an inspiration," Francis said. "So, we're looking forward to also educating people about (cancer)."

"The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" will be performed Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30, and Sunday afternoon at two.

In a related note, Francis says she is so far this season, with a few more shows, to go, within two percent of her budget for all Red Carpet Shows, which she believes is a good thing.
