Orpheum Grant Denied Again
The Orpheum Theatre's second attempt to get a federal economic stimulus-funded grant in order to make major capital construction improvements has failed.

Orpheum Theatre president Kate Francis says she got word a few weeks ago from the Department of the Interior that their second application for a federal "Save America's Treasures" grant through the National Park Service was turned down.

Francis says the rejection of the grant request, which was less than the half-million dollars requested the first time last year, was familiar.

"We were, again, denied the grant, based on the fact that the Galesburg Historic District is not on the National Register for national significance, rather, state significance," Francis said. "The requirement of the grant application that it be for national significance. But, again, the application I have has none of those marked. So, we're still trying to encourage members of the city, because this has to be something that they pursue."

Francis says she's not aware, however, of just what the status of those efforts are to get the designation changed.

A meeting of the Knox County Civic Center Authority Board was to have occurred Wednesday -- however, no business was conducted due to a lack of a quorum.
