Gov Candidate Holds Job Fair
Job applicants turned out by the dozens Thursday for a job fair at the campaign office of an independent candidate for governor.

The job seekers, some wearing suits and ties, others dressed more casually, were lined up out the door, around the corner and down the block -- not a surprise to the host, Scott Lee Cohen.

"The people of Illinois are hurting very bad right now," he said. "They can't provide for their families, they can't provide housing, food, the bare necessities to live, so I'm not surprised to see this amount of people here today."

They were admitted 30 at a time to meet and hand resumes to representatives of several businesses that are hiring. Cohen says he wishes all of these folks could find work, but he'd be happy if half do as a result of the job fair.

Will people vote for Cohen if they find a job through his job fair? One man said he would vote for Cohen no matter the results inside; others said they would evaluate Cohen the politician independent of his effort to organize the job fair, of which they were nevertheless appreciative.

Cohen says he is planning other job fairs around the state, but he did not specify locations.

Cohen, a businessman, used job fairs to generate support and goodwill to win the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor. He was asked to leave the ticket when his history of domestic violence and child support delinquency surfaced, and he then filed to run for governor as an independent.
