Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Program Begins Friday
Enrollment for the Illinois Pre-Existing Condition Plan (IPXP) begins at 10 a.m. Friday.

The federally funded plan will provide coverage for a number of Illinois residents who have been denied health coverage due to pre-existing conditions.

"The Affordable Care Act's protection from discrimination based on health status cannot come soon enough for individuals and families who have been denied coverage," said Mike McRaith, director of the Illinois Department of Insurance. "The transitional coverage provided by the federally funded IPXP is an important step as we move toward and Illinois health insurance marketplace with improved performance, accountability and transparency."

An estimated $196 million in federal funds will be used to cover 4,000 to 6,000 individuals, according to McRaith, who adds that the program is on a first-come, first-served basis.

McRaith says the program acts like any other major medical insurance plan and covers doctor's visits, specialty care, hospital care and prescription drugs.

A federal program begins Jan. 1, 2014. McRaith says there will be enough money to cover those in the IPXP during the transition period.
