Ameren to Create New Subsidiary, But What's the Cost?
Ameren Corporation is set to open a new subsidiary of the company.

The new branch is Ameren Transmission Company or ATX. The idea is that a subsidiary focused solely on transmission will create more efficient energy lines with less congestion and possibility for power black outs.

The question, however, is who will foot the bill.

During a conference call Monday, the new president of ATX, Maureen Barkowski, said some cost would be passed on to the consumer.

"These projects are regional in nature," Barkowski said. "As such, we'd expect them to quality for regional cost allocation under the Midwest ISO. Given that, the rate impact on Ameren's existing customers, both retail and wholesale transmission customers, would be very modest."

Barkowski says she is not sure exactly what the increase would be but says will be spread out among customers in various regions.

ATX is also waiting for approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for the proposed projects for the company and for rate treatment approval that will help pay for the $1.3 Billion cost.
