Library Board Discusses Budget
Members of the Galesburg Public Library Board are trying to put together a realistic operating budget for next year, but the reality is there isn't enough money.

The library finance committee met Thursday to discuss what a final budget should look like. That included a $27,000r reduction for book funding compared to what was proposed last year.

Even simple needs like offices supplies become a problem for the library, according to Director Pam Van Kirk.

"Most of our consumables are very library-specific," Van Kirk said, "Whether it's theft detection strips, or the theft boxes for [Audio-Visual], those come with a price tag, so we're not talking paper clips, pens, pencils, and paper."

The board plans to stick with their original plan: present the "bare-bones" budget to the city council when it comes time, but make the case that more funding in the form of a higher tax levy is desperately needed.
