Congressman Dispels Alleged Myth About Social Security
A local Congressman says social security isn't under the doom and gloom members of the opposite party may want you to believe it is.

17th District Democrat Phil Hare told that to a small group at the offices of the Knox County Council for Developmental Disabilities Thursday. He says Republicans want you to think that Social Security is on the verge of drying up and that benefits could soon cease.

But the Galesburg native says noting could be further from the truth.

"On the 75th anniversary of social security, its August 5th trustee's report reafirm that the program's financial strenght and stability is well. The trustees confirm that social security can pay full benefits through the year 2037 even if we do nothing more."

Hare is calling for reforms that would make social security solvent for longer, including increasing the income cap on social security payroll taxes.

He says there is no reason to wait until 2037 to make improvements to the program.
