Galesburg Faces Serious Competition for "TIGER" Grants
The city of Galesburg is looking to get a share of federal TIGER grants.

The money must be used for transportation improvements.

Galesburg officials are looking to construct a multi-modal center to Colton Park by replacing or adding to the Amtrak Depot.

An application for the grant has already been submitted. If the application is accepted, and city manager Dane Bragg expects it will be, the city will need to submit further details and proposals.

That is why the city decided to hire a Springfield firm to help with the second round.

Mayor Sal Garza says a project of this magnitude could not be completed in-house.

"This is a highly-competitive process," Garza said. "It isn't just enough to actually submit an application. It goes to the quality of that application, in regards to all the other submittals across the nation."

If the first grant application is accepted, the second is due August 26th. That doesn't give city administrators much time to prepare, which is another reason the firm is needed.

The cost to hire the firm, Massie Massie and Associates, is $10,400.

Council members voted unanimously in favor of hiring the help.
