Amtrak Ridership Up
More people are riding Amtrak across Illinois.

50,000 more people have ridden between Chicago and St. Louis, 38,000 more between Chicago and Milwaukee, 8,000 more rode between Chicago and Carbondale, and about 7,500 more between Chicago and Quincy.

Marc Magliari, spokesman for Amtrak, says it started with higher gas prices.

"One of the things you can't predict is what the cost of gasoline is going to be. The cost of gasoline tomorrow is unknowable, the cost of gasoline three months from now is unknowable, but the price of you Amtrak ticket is very much knowable. You can lock it in almost 11 months ahead of time and not have to worry about gas prices."

Magliari thinks the numbers could set a new record in October, after the company's fiscal year ends.
