City Council Discusses 2011 Road Work
Galesburg City Council members met early Monday evening to discuss the 2011 budget.

Members heard a presentation from city engineer Wayne Carl about the plans for city street and sidewalk projects during 2011.

Carl says the available budget for the projects is about six million dollars less than he would like to have.

"We have preventative maintenance, rehabilitation, reconstruction. How much money should we be budgeting every year for those types of streets, in order to be able to improve our system?" Carl asked. "In total, the annual amount that ideally we'd like to have is 7.6 (million dollars). But there's only $1.6 million that we're planning on spending this year."

Carl adds that sidewalk projects are about four years behind schedule as far as keeping up with deterioration.

With the $1.6 million that is estimated to be available, Carl proposes overlays to parts of Hawkinson Avenue and Third Street as well as reconstruction to Locust Street.

One of the largest projects, however, will be beginning work on the West Main Street overpass project.

The work session was one of many members will have to discuss the city's budget.
