Harvesting Could Soon Begin
Corn growers in Southern Illinois may be in the fields harvesting as early as this week.

Statewide, corn is estimated at 13 percent mature, according to the weekly USDA Crop Progress report. Crop statistician Brad Schwab says much of that is in Southern Illinois, where farmers were able to plant two weeks earlier than in the central and northern parts of the state. He says he wouldn’t be surprised if the corn harvest began in earnest this week.

Last year, the corn harvest didn’t wrap up until December, with some fields never getting picked.

The corn advanced from 2 percent mature last week to 13 percent now. Last year at this time, none was mature. The five-year average is 5 percent.

The corn is rated 64 percent good or excellent.

Soybeans are 62 percent good or excellent. The beans are just entering the turning yellow and shedding leaves stages.

One percent of sorghum is mature.
