Guy Vitale, Longtime Businessman and Award-Winner, Dies
UPDATED 2:33pm 8/24/10 A Galesburg man who's been a successful local businessman for decades and who gave back to the local community for about that long has died.

Guy Vitale passed away Tuesday morning at a Galesburg hospital following a long bout with cancer. He was 65.

Vitale had been president and General Manager of Galesburg-based beverage distribution company G&M Distributors -- the company his late father Louis founded in Galesburg in 1946.

Vitale just last November won the Galesburg-Area Chamber of Commerce's annual Thomas B. Herring Community Service Award, and told WGIL he was humbled by the recognition.

"It means a lot, because I've lived in Galesburg most of my life," Vitale said. "It's always an honor to have people whom you live with who you think know you the best, select you for a public service award. Plus, I knew Tom Herring very well, and he was an extremely outstanding individual. Anything associated with his name is an honor."

Vitale, outside of business, has been involved with the Knox County YMCA, the local Red Cross and United Way chapters, and the boards of the Galesburg Public Schools Foundation, the National Railroad Hall of Fame, and Costa Catholic Academy, among others.

Funeral services are scheduled for Friday at 10 am at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Galesburg. A visitation is Thursday from 4 pm to 8 pm at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel.
