Record Numbers of Illinois Residents Get Food Stamps
More people are on food stamps in Illinois than ever before.

The number is an unprecedented 1.65 million, up almost 12 percent from last year, when the figure was 1.51 million.

"Basically, it's the result of the recession," says Jennifer Hrycyna, associate director of human capital development for the Illinois Department of Human Services. "That's probably the biggest motivation right now is that more and more people are in need and seeking help from our offices."

The food stamp program is now officially called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. For the 780,000 Illinois families enrolled, the average benefit is about $300 a month, which Hrycyna says does not meet families' food needs. Many also depend on food pantries and other resources.

It is estimated that 80 percent of those eligible for food stamps in Illinois are enrolled.
