Pork Profits Low
The pork industry has taken hit after hit in the past couple years.

Profits have been low, grain prices have been up up, and of course there was the threat of "swine flu" last year.

The combination of all these factors have lead to lower numbers of sows, which is affecting other industries according to executive director of the Illinois Pork Producer's Association, Jim Kaitschuck.

"Across the country what you've seen, particularly after the last approximately 30 months of no profitability times for producers, you saw a decreasing number in the sow herd across the United States. So yes, it's not a plant specific issue but it's a pork industry specific issue in terms of our overall production."

The plant Kaitschuck refers to in the Bob Evans plant in Galva that closed recently due to the low availability of sows.

The problem is not limited to the U.S. either. Kaitschuck tells WGIL the issues have been global, as evidenced by the fact the Bob Evans plant received its sows from Canada.
