Authorities Identify Decatur Man Killed in Trench
DECATUR, Ill. (AP) -- Authorities in central Illinois have identified a Decatur man killed when a deep trench collapsed onto him.

Macon County Coroner Michael Day on Thursday said 58 year old Thomas Gipson died while working in a residential neighborhood. Day says Gipson's chest, stomach and head were crushed.

Firefighters were called to the scene Wednesday evening but Gipson was already dead. Fire crews spent about three hours digging through heavy clay by hand and bucket to free his body.

Decatur Fire Chief Matt Sekosky says the trench was located next to a brick home and was about 5 feet wide and 8 to 10 feet deep.

Authorities say Gipson was helping a neighbor with a drainage project when the trench collapsed.
