Early Harvest Expected for Farmers
Corn growers in southern Illinois may be in the fields harvesting as early as this week.

Statewide corn is estimated at 13 percent mature according to the weekly USDA crop progress report.

Crop statistician Brad Schwab says much of that is in southern Illinois.

"What's going on down south, their crops were two weeks ahead of central Illinois, when they were getting them planted and then they've had the warm weather down there so they generally with have the opportunity to harvest corn before other parts of the state just because they get it in earlier. I wouldn't be surprised if later in this week they're not already harvesting down there."

Schwab says some farmers have already picked corn from end-rows but even as corn matures, farmers will wait until it dries naturally before harvesting.

In the western part of the start, farmers aren't quite ready to enter the fields yet with only 1 percent mature corn.

Continued above average temperatures could help push corn along and dry it out a bit more quickly. Last week the region saw temperatures at that were about 1.3 degrees above average.
