Advocacy Group Wants Attention on Judicial Elections
A southern Illinois organization that calls itself a legal watchdog group is watching an election race that it says you might not otherwise think about.

Marion-based Illinois Lawsuit Abuse Watch is asking voters to educate themselves about judicial elections on the November ballot, more specifically, the ballot asking if Supreme Court Justice Thomas Kilbride should be retained on the bench.

Illinois Lawsuit Abuse Watch Executive Director Travis Akin tells WGIL the health care reform debate is to blame.

"Back in February, four justices on the supreme court decided the future of health care for millions of Americans, and whether you agree or disagree with that decision, I think we can all agree that that was a significant decision, one that has a real work impact on our daily life."

Akin says the state supreme court overturned the 2005 medical malpractice reform act lawmakers passed and was signed into law, and he accuses the judicial branch of acting like the legislative branch as a result.

He's not specifically saying Kilbride should be removed from the bench, along with three others who voted to overturn the law, just that voters need to be educated on the issues.
