Deciding the Future of the Knox County Courthouse
The Knox County board members have been discussing the future of the county courthouse for years.

The building is aging and quickly running out of usable space for all the court's and county administrator's needs.

Three options have been presented to the board for consideration by the Iowa based architectural firm Durant and Johnson Building Systems.

They include building a brand new courthouse, renovating the current courthouse with an addition, and or rehabilitating the current building and having a county administration building off-site.

Wednesday night the board learned just what those options would cost, $29 million, $25 million, and $27 million respectively.

Board Chairman Greg Bacon says the best option would probably be the cheapest which is renovation with an on-site addition.

"We can scale these back a little bit, these are wish lists, but that's something we need to look at. Right now we are trying to determine to get our big view into a narrow view to see which way we want to go. As a committee we all kind of like option B."

Durant determined the county needs 66,000 square feet of court space and 33,000 for administration use.

The proposed addition would include the additional administrative space along with a walkway to connect the two structures.
