Candidates for Comptroller and Treasurer Campaign in Galesburg
If both were elected but had their way, one of the two Republican candidates for state treasurer and comptroller might be out of a job after just their first term.

State Senator Dan Rutherford and former State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka campaigned in Galesburg Wednesday, and say if elected, they'll urge lawmakers to let voters decide whether the two offices should be consolidated, as Topinka claims they were before the 1950's.

The two say the plan would save money for one, but Rutherford says neither know which should actually get the job.

"Candidly, Judy and I haven't sat down and talked this through. The point is, this is bigger than Judy Baar Topinka and Dan Rutherford. We're talking about changing the constitution of Illinois, a structural change in our government, and in a bold way standing here together to do that."

The earliest, if approved, the question could get on an election ballot is November of 2012, and if approved, it wouldn't take effect until 2014.

Critics claim the opportunity for fraud exists if the offices are consolidated, and wouldn't save the $12 million Topinka and Rutherford claim it would.
