Funding Needed to Keep Addiction Deaths Down
Police and transportation leaders in Illinois often celebrate the decline in traffic deaths, particularly those related to alcohol. But a group that treats Illinoisans addicted to alcohol and other drugs says there is another side to the story.

Treatment Alternatives for Safe Communities (TASC), the statewide not-for-profit group which provides such services for the state, says without a commitment to pay for prevention and treatment, the death toll could go back up.

Daphne Baille, TASC's spokeswoman, says the programs her organization oversees cost far less than what the ravages of addiction cost society.

"A key strategy to push those numbers lower is adequate funding for alcohol prevention and treatments services, but Illinois has cut funding for these services by 30 percent in the last two years," says TASC president Pamela Rodriguez. "If fewer people get treatment, alcohol related fatalities will likely start to climb again."
