Galesburg Superintendent Disappointed with Race to the Top Decisions
The superintendent of the Galesburg School District says another example of his displeasure with state government these days came this week.

District 205's Gene Denisar says that came Tuesday when Illinois learned it was not one of the winners of the second allocations of federal economic stimulus money under the "Race to the Top" program, the plan by which the state was going to reform parts of the education system.

Denisar tells WGIL the State Board of Education wasn't too keen in including the money in their budget, even though they weren't assured of winning it.

"Talk about ignorant things to put it in their budget when it's a competitive grant and of course they didn't get it. So it's a scary thing."

Denisar said the way state officials are operating is, quote, "pathetic."

He tells WGIL the lack of "Race to the Top" money means if District 205 wants any more money from the state, there's really only one more way to get it.

"Knox County has an incredible opportunity; a penny increase in the sales tax. What does the community get for that? They get safe schools, we can continues to increase our student achievement, community pride; our buildings are starting to age."

Voters will get the chance in November to consider approving the sales tax increase.
