A Balanced Budget for Monmouth-Roseville Schools
The Monmouth-Roseville School District still has to press forward with a financial recovery plan because of years of budget deficits, but this school year, the budget will be balanced.

That's according to Superintendent Paul Woehlke, who told a special board meeting Thursday night he's projecting nearly $12 million in both revenue and expenditures, thanks in part to the two closed elementary schools, and salary freezes for both teachers and administrators.

But Woehlke says the reason why some figures still look red, has to do with red ink that predated his tenure and carried over into last year.

"Because we had a negative fund balance at end of 2009-2010, we would still end up with a negative fund balance prior to a loan from working cash. At the end of 2010-2011, very preliminarily it looks like there might be an opportunity that that's going to stabilize in the out years."

The vote to approve the tentative budget was 6-0. One board member, Lynn Shimmin, abstained, because he says, he's seen the same document as everyone else, but it's not good enough for him.

A final spending plan will be voted on next month. The budget is now on display at the district administrative office.
