Fire School at Hawthorne Center Saturday -- Open to Public
Hundreds of firefighters from the area will be in Galesburg this weekend for fire school.

This will be the 15th annual event that provides training and some certification for mostly volunteer firefighters.

This year, however, Capt. Scott Benson with the Galesburg Fire Department, tells WGIL the fire school with be open to the public.

"From 10 to Noon (Saturday), we're going to welcome the public out," Benson said. "We're going to allow free will donations; if you want to put money in the boot, you can. If not, that's fine. We're going to give hot dogs. So, if you want to come out and eat a hot dog, and watch the firefighters work, that's a great thing for everybody in the community."

Money from the Fill-the-Boot campaign benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Benson says the fire school will also be a good opportunity for parents the get some education with their children, and possibly qualify for a free fire detector.

The fire school will be held Saturday at the training site at the Hawthorne Center on Veterans Drive.
