CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois saw an average temperature of 77.7 degrees in July; 1.9 degrees above normal.

That's according to state climatologist Jim Angel of the Illinois State Water Survey.

Last month was warm and humid, but Angel says it was only the 19th warmest July on record. The warmest July was recorded in 1936 when temperatures averaged 83.1 degrees. Last year, Illinois saw the coolest July on record with an average of 70.2 degrees.

Illinois also logged an average rainfall of 5.6 inches last month. The northern Illinois communities of Elizabeth and Freeport reported the most rain in Illinois last month. Elizabeth was drenched with 14.12 inches, while Freeport got 13.46 inches.
