Police Support Galesburg Schools Attendance Plan
Galesburg's top cop says there's no reason for his department not to support the new push by the Galesburg School District to increase its attendance rate.

Police Chief David Christensen says simply, if kids are in school, they're not doing other things, so it was important for the department to support the newly-implemented "Dream Big...Everyday...School" plan that district officials hope will raise overall attendance by at least one percent.

Christensen tells WGIL cops will, if asked, take potentially truant kids to school, but it won't deter from the larger goal of public safety.

"We've long been involved in truancy cases," Christensen said. "We may get more calls with the [343-9151] hotline, but that remains to be seen. We've long been involved in working with truancy cases. I checked the numbers for last year, and we issued a good number of truancy citations. Some of those are administrative tickets, some of those are notices to appear in court."

Christensen says there were at least two instances last year where parents were even cited for allowing their son or daughter to be truant. He does believe, however, that most parents have a vested interest in making sure their children are in school.
