Durbin Talks Stimulus
U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin says the deficit is an important concern, but not the only concern.

Durbin is a member of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, the so-called Deficit Commission, a public-private panel which is seeking ways to rein in the government's deficit. But Durbin says deficit reduction can’t trump every other activity of government.

"As we talk about deficit reduction, let us at least have some priorities that deal with job creation and the infrastructure that we need to serve us in the 21st Century," Durbin said in a speech to the City Club of Chicago.

Specifically, Durbin wants sufficient stimulus to turn around the economy, and investment in infrastructure, such as roads, transit, schools and broadband internet access in rural and remote areas.

The federal deficit is now over $1 trillion -- down a little from 2009 -- and the accumulated national debt is $13 trillion.
