Knox County Fair Kicks Off
Heat and humidity, and some early morning rains, didn't stop the Knox County Fair from officially getting underway Tuesday.

What organizers believe is the oldest county fair in the state continues through Saturday at the fairgrounds in Knoxville, and Fair Board President Tom Collopy says many of the traditional items will be happening this year like harness races, the truck and tractor pulls, the demolition derby, and livestock and animal judging among other things.

But Collopy tells W-G-I-L there's a great emphasis on activities for children this year.

"We've got Miller's big petting zoo out of Geneseo, which brings lots of animals, and then we've got Wild Life Prarie Park coming down to the Munson Building to put on some educatioinal programs on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, so we're toward kid events and animals right now. Kind of the basics."

Collopy says he believes the Illinois State Fair, in a tight budget year, adopted that mantra and is largely going back to it as well, and he says other county fairs will have to start thinking about that, too.
